Domination continues

Mavericks remain perfect on the season with sweep of Adams State

2037

Domination seems to be an ongoing habit for the Colorado Mesa University softball team as the Mavericks kept their undefeated going by sweeping Adams State. CMU scored a total of 29 points to ASU’s four, making it a grand total of 57 points during the two doubleheaders while only allowing nine points in all four games.

In the first game, the final score rounded out to 19-4, almost matching the first game yesterday. The only inning that the Mavericks didn’t score was in the second, all of the other innings saw at least a single run.

“The hitting was solid for this game,” Head coach Ben Garcia said. “It didn’t come early but it came often. With 19 hits in the first game and 12 or 13 hits in the second.”

In the first, Kellie Mrofcza hit an RBI double to get the early 1-0 lead. The third inning consisted of Adams State obtaining their sense of momentum of the day with a home run in which would tie the score for only one inning. In the fourth, Alexa Samuels scored off of a single by Bailey Kleespies. Hailey Hinson then followed this up with a triple that got a two RBI, after which Mrofcza single and also achieved a two RBI. The fifth inning started the scoring when Zoe Pakes hit a double to left field, allowing Tayah Gerber to score and was closed out with Zoe Pakes and Kaila Jacobi both scoring on an error.

The Mavericks would end the first game by scoring nine runs in the sixth inning to add significant insult to injury like the day prior.

The defense had yet another strong performance and kept ASU down to only four runs and had a single error. The pitching was strong as well with McKenzie Surface throwing seven strikeouts and allowing only six hits.

CMU did not slow down in the second game either.

Brooke Hodgson would continue her tremendous season performance by going 2-3 and knocking four RBI in the process. Hodgson leads the team with a .508 batting average with 32 hits and 32 RBI.

The defense had zero errors for the whole game, showing another stellar performance. Kimbri Herring also pitched a great game to boot. Only allowing two hits and throwing 11 strikeouts showed a great effort the pitcher.

“We want to continue to get better,” Garcia said. “We want to be able to develop the right way and a big part of that is to have a strong bench so that we can interject them when needed.”

CMU’s next game is against New Mexico Highlands on the road in Las Vegas, New Mexico on March 10. They will be looking to keep up their defensive game and to shore up some of the intricacies of the game that could’ve gone better for the Mavericks as they are always improving with every game that they play.
