The Mavericks came together for a team victory Sunday afternoon at Suplizio field. Every starter in the game contributed by each getting at least one hit. The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) baseball team combined for a total of 21 hits to help elevate them over Minot State University 17-11.

Junior Caleb Farmer led the team in batting going 4-6 with one double and three runs batted in (RBI)

Farmer’s RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning cleared the bases allowing junior shortstop Chase Hamilton, third baseman Spencer Bramwell and outfielder Matt Turner to score.

Turner had himself another solid day as he was one of the power hitter for CMU on Saturday hitting two home runs. Turner did not hit any home runs on Sunday but his defensive efforts and power at the plate started the scoring off for the Mavericks.

In the bottom of the first inning Turner came up to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a long double through the middle to clear the bases on a 1-0 count. He gave the Mavericks the lead after Matt Cassin grounded out to score Tanner Garner tying the game earlier in the fourth. Turner stepped up to bat two batters later with sophomore catcher Haydn McGeary on third ready to score and he did just that on a sacrifice fly to center field.

Turner had four RBI on the day while going 2-3 with one walk and one strikeout.

Junior first baseman Jordan Stubbings and Garner both hit .500 each going 3-6 with two runs scored.

Pitching looked better for the Mavericks in this one even though they gave up 11 runs but only nine of those were earned runs.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Josh Danyliw got the start and found himself in jam with runners on the corners early on but was able to get a strike out MSU’s Blake Gallagher to end the first inning.

Danyliw found trouble again in the second but was able to pitch around that one only allowing two runs in the second. The third was a little but the third gave him more trouble and he didn’t find his way out of it this time allowing four more runs to score and giving the Beavers an early lead. Despite giving up six runs Danyliw had six strikeouts.

Freshman right handed pitcher Cade Nicol was called in from the bullpen after two and two-thirds innings and got the final out. Nicol stayed in the game for four innings of work and struck out five.

Junior right handed pitchers Anthony Durbano and Frankie Fitzgerald closed it out for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against Regis University on Friday March 6 at Sulpizio Field.
