The Mavericks knew going into Sunday’s game against Colorado School of Mines that it was going to be a fight the whole way. Leading up to the matchup Sunday, the Colorado Mesa University women’s soccer team and the Colorado School of Mines were both 4-1 and had the goal of winning their first conference game. Both teams knew that this game would be their toughest matchup to date.

Coming into Sunday, the Mavericks were high off a 2-1 double-overtime win against CCU as the Orediggers were coming off of an 11-0 victory against Western. However, it was Mines who would keep their momentum going as they rolled to the 2-1 victory over CMU.

The Mavericks took no time to score first. Only 17 minutes into the game,  Zoe Peterson found herself an opportunity to and took it. The Mavericks only goal of the game would be Peterson’s first of the year.

The Orediggers came back quickly when freshman Jordan Barnhart scored her first collegiate goal as a response. Mines then go on to take the lead no more than three minutes later when Giselle Sawaged scored in the 35th minute.

It was still an impressive fight put on by the Mavericks, despite the loss, as the team had seven shots as three of them were on goal.  Kamrie Gunderson had six saves on the night. Mines took 13 shots.

The Mavericks will return back to Walker Field on Friday, September 27 to play Metro State University-Denver before taking on the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs on September 29.
