The Mavericks took another loss Sunday afternoon as the No. 2 ranked Mountain Lions of the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs won with a final score of 2-0.

UCCS (8-0) gave CMU (4-4) an immense challenge and came into Walker Field with an undefeated record. That would not change as the Mountain Lion defense gave the Mavericks an almost impossible scoring task as CMU shot the ball only three times while UCCS had 14 shots.

“They played a high backline and we needed to have more runs and dangerous balls in behind to test them.” Head Coach Dani Thurman said.

The Mavericks played a decent defensive game for the better half of the afternoon. They did not allow any goals until the 58th-minute mark of this game when Shanade Hopcroft found Kaitlin Hinkle off a corner kick. Hinkle found the back of the net and snatch her sixth goal of the season.

“We adjusted to a more attacking formation in hopes we could find the equalizer before their second goal,” Thurman said.

Later on, the Mountain Lions got to the goal again and this time it would be Tanner Sanders. It was Sanders’ fourth goal on the year.

The impeccable UCCS defense didn’t let the Mavericks get a single shot on goal, let alone handle the ball. Along with having 14 shots the UCCS also had six corner kicks over the Mavericks.

“They have never backed down from any challenge or opponent even when we have played the top of the RMAC and top-ranked teams in these first weekends of play,” Thurman said.

The Mavericks have seen very good teams within their first four games of RMAC play. Conference play will continue this next week on the road at Regis University on October 4 and Black Hills State University on October 6.
