CMU expands student housing

Colorado Mesa University is in the process of expanding student housing with construction of a new dormitory on campus, located in the Northwest corner next to Garfield and Wingate hall.

The running title of this new dormitory is Wingate Apartments, although this will not be the official name of the building. It will be in the shape of an L and lines up againsts Wingate Hall.

Wingate Hall and Wingate Apartments will mirror the shape of Garfield Hall and will form a courtyard between the residence halls.

The company designing the Maverick Hotel is also working on the new dormitory. However, the construction is staggered and construction of Wingate Apartments is expected to be finished in the July timeframe, six months behind the hotel.

”The [dorm] will finish probably in the July timeframe,” Vice President of Student Services John Marshall said. “It will be ready to go by next fall, so this year’s freshman will be the first group of returners to have an opportunity to live in it.”

On the outside, the new dorm will be similar to Garfield Hall. On the inside however, the new housing facility will include four floors in an apartment style housing, including rooms with a kitchen area not offered to first year students.

The new resident hall is expected to house around 120 students with single rooms and full size beds.

The only question that remains is what the name of the new housing facility will be.

”We’re gonna let you guys name it, so we’ll go through the same process we had with the last several halls just like we did with Confluence and Wingate and a few others,” Marshall said. “The students will be in charge with coming up with the name, so like you I’m excited to figure out what we name it.”

Additional information will continually be updated on the Residence Life webpage.
