CIC and GSA change their names to be more inclusive

The former Colorado Mesa University Cultural Diversity Board recently changed their name to the Cultural Inclusion Counsel (CIC). CIC is composed of six different student alliances, including the Genders and Sexualities Alliance (GSA), formerly known as the Gay-Straight Alliance.

“We had felt that changing the name of our organization, we are also changing the context and public perception of our organization,” Vice Director of CIC Justin Pascual said. “We felt like with this specific name change, we are more inviting and inclusive.”

Along with inclusion, the GSA also recently changed their name for the same reasons.

“We changed it to actually to be more inclusive because we felt that the GSA was a good name until we went to the conference that we went to and then they were talking to us about how it could actually limit people wanting to come because it says ‘gay-straight’ instead of including everything,” Director of GSA Avery Ashby said. “Changing it to the Genders and Sexualities Alliance actually includes people of all genders and all sexuality’s to come and join our organization.”
