Another race, another win.
The Maverick Cycling Team won their third title of this season on May 7 during the Road National Championships. Cycling has now won four out of the last five national title events, with their lone non-first place finish coming during the USA BMX Championships in March.
The team finished with 444 points, while Milligan University recorded 404 points and rivals Fort Lewis College (FLC) and Marian University (MU) tied for third place at the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championship.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) already won the Track National Championship in Sept. which also gave the Mavericks their first-ever Omnium National Title, which measures the best overall cycling program in a given season by adding the Omnium point totals from the individual championships. CMU’s Omnium Championship broke MU’s 16 year winning streak.
The Mavs then started the 2022-2023 season in style, edging out FLC by just 8 points (808 vs 800) to win their third straight Mountain Bike Championship since 2021. The team then won the Cyclocross Nationals in Dec. The cyclocross win gave the Mavericks 80 omnium points
CMU then finished third at the BMX Championships (66 omnium points) and did not compete in any more major races until this last one in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Sophomore Olivia Cummins and senior Ian Anderson led the way for the Mavericks, finishing second for the men and the women. However, it was their depth that gave them the team win and their fourth straight national title.
The Mavericks now sit atop the omnium rankings with a score of 306, followed by MU with 273 and Lindsey Wilson College at third with 225 points. With just one more national race left in Sept., the Mavericks are in a great position to repeat after winning their first-ever Omnium Title.
