ASG discusses freezing in-state tuition and spring elections

The Associated Student Government’s meeting on Feb. 6 involved discussion of spring ASG elections and the effects of freezing in-state tuition.

ASG Vice President Jeff Vela brought up discussion about spring elections. “Intent to run forms will officially open next Monday the eleventh,” Vela said. “They will close the twenty-second at 12 p.m. There will be a campaign meeting with myself later that day at 4 p.m. It is mandatory for all candidates to attend that meeting, and if they are not able to, they will have to meet with me the following week to be able to be eligible to run in the election.” The election voting will take place Apr. 8-9.

The next matter of discussion was the State Legislature passing a bill to place a freeze on student tuition, meaning in-state students will not see an increase in their tuition from year to year.  Out-of-state students will still see an increase. Due to this legislation, there will be a need for a cut back in some areas such as student health offices. There is a probability there will be an increase in fees to students who go to the Student Health Center. This could be in the form of a higher co-pay for services.

Mesa Motor Sports attended the meeting to request funding for the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Michigan event. They have 22 members who will be attending the event. For those members attending, there will be around 20 event sponsors there which provides an opportunity for networking for future employment.

The club asked for an amount which included transportation costs and hotel costs. The bill was amended to only include transportation costs. The voter passed the amendment to give the club $2,757.76 for their transportation costs. Mesa Motor Sports has the option to come back at a later date to request further funding for the trip if needed.

They are requesting an amount of $8,000 to fund their trip to Augusta, GA for the USA Cycling Collegiate Road National Championships being held May 10-12. The bill passed at an amended amount of $6,000. This allows the team to purchase the airline tickets at a cheaper rate by purchasing in advance.
