A peek within North Avenue Hall

Colorado Mesa University offers several types of housing for the increasing amounts of underclassmen. From Garfield to Piñon the halls are scattered throughout the campus.

One such hall is North Avenue apartments and suites which reside on the corner of the campus and offers a brand-new experience for continuing students. Unlike most other dorms on campus, North Avenue only offers suite and apartment style rooms. Rather than the traditional set up that the typical college movie depicts; two beds in a hall full of students.

Each room can hold up to five or six students (suites can vary between five and six max) so it is normal to have five roommates living in the same room. The suites are for all students and have four rooms in them. There is a living space for the roommates to share and two bathrooms. These rooms match the most part with those in the North Ave. apartments. There are singles and doubles in each room, nothing too different from most dorms, however, the apartments come with some special features that sets them apart from the suites and other dorms on campus. North Avenue apartments come with a full-size kitchen, that means stove, oven, fridge, the works. Only the apartments on campus offer this type of setup. Only continuing students can live in the apartments. Freshmen have to wait their turn.

A resident is Justin Johnson who lives with five other roommates in his North Ave. apartment, said, “We have a full-sized kitchen, so that’s always nice. I don’t have to go to the dining hall all the time to get food, I can cook food there, so that’s very beneficial.” Some students can relate to the desire to stay in their pajamas and cook some ramen instead of putting in the effort to get dressed and make the trek to the dining hall.

Despite all the apparent pros to living here, there are some cons that accompany them. First, is all about location. North Avenue is all the way in the corner of the campus, it’s practically off-campus, so if a resident likes the gym, they will have to put in some work to reach the Mav Center so you can work out. It’s full size kitchen stands to be one of the great aspects of the hall while distance is its main disappointment, so if someone is a continuing student looking for an interesting hall for their remaining years, semesters, or days, North Avenue just might be the building for them.
