Colorado Mesa University’s women’s soccer team was coming off of a huge 2-0 victory against Metro State University last week. However, the momentum didn’t carry over into Friday night’s game against Colorado Christian University. The Cougars came into Walker field and defeated the Mavericks 1-0.
“Massively disappointed,” Head coach Jason Clare said. “I don’t know where the team was today to be perfectly honest. We didn’t play our way. We played with no tempo. We didn’t play with much passion today.”
The lone goal of the match came in the 12 minute of play when Maddison Hogan of CCU fired a shot from 50 yards out and it came off the hands of Maverick goalie Emily Signorio and fell into the back of the net.
“She can’t have that much time on the ball,” Clare said.
CMU finished with more shots (16-11), shots on goal (8-5) and corners (3-2), but it was the Cougars who dominated for the majority of the game. The Mavericks had several chances to tie the game in the final five minutes of action, but the team couldn’t convert.
Coming into the weekend, all eyes were set on the matchup on Sunday, that Clare believes the team forgot to handle the game on Friday first.
“Everyone talked about [Colorado School of Mines], and we told them that we can’t be complacent about this team,” Clare said. “And I think that is one thing that we were today was complacent. We thought we had already won before we kicked the ball.”
Now the Mavericks get to face off against CSM on Sunday. The Orediggers have not lost a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in five years. So the Mavericks are going to have to come out a lot different than they did on Friday night.
“We have to have a response,” Clare said. “Hopefully we can play well and get back to the team that we are.”
The Mavericks currently sit at 6-5-0 for the season and 3-3-0 in the RMAC. Kickoff for Sunday’s matchup is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Walker Field.
