The Mavericks finally got their first home win against Colorado Christian University on Friday night and got some momentum heading into conference play with the 1-0 win over the Cougars.

After losing their first home game against Cal State East Bay, and tying their second against Humbolt State, the Colorado Mesa University women’s soccer team finally got their first home win and opened up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) play with a win.

The one and only goal of the game came from Zoe Peterson who gave CMU the lead with an extra-effort goal in the second half.

The Mavericks took 16 shots total where nine of which came on goal. The shot leader for CMU, midfielder Alexis Allard, took four shots on Friday with two of them being on goal. The rest of the offense was credited to Zoe Peterson, who scored the only goal for the Mavericks, and Ryanne Parker who was credited the assist for the Peterson score.

“Super pleased with how we played,” Head Coach Jason Claire said. “We executed the game plan perfectly…everything we put in to practice going into the conference schedule we showed tonight aside from scoring.”

Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Signorio held strong with seven saves. One of the seven was significantly excellent as Signorio had to leave her feet and have the ball bounce off the goalpost to prevent the goal in the second half.

“There was a little spot where we got a little frantic,” Signorio said. “But we held it together and kept the game under our belt.”

It was Signorino’s start and she now has 11 saves on the season to give her a .909 save percentage, which leads the team.

Both teams were credited six fouls each. The only yellow card of the matchup was gifted to midfielder Ryanne Parker on an extra aggressive defensive play.

The first half of the game was filled with aggressive offensive play by the Mavericks and very tight defense by the Cougars. CMU pressured the Cougars throughout the first half but could not find a solid opportunity to put the ball in the back of the net.

The second half was again dominated by the Maverick’s offense, but the Cougars also found footing on their offensive side of the pitch taking 12 of their 17 shots during the second half as the Mavericks found themselves somewhat lackadaisical on defense after they scored the only goal of the match. However, the maverick defense dug in and held on the 1-0 score as the game clock eventually reached all zeros.

CMU will continue RMAC play when they face off against first-place Colorado School of Mines on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.
