The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) walked away with two wins against Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Saturday afternoon.
Going into the bottom half of the seventh inning in the second game, the Mavericks were down 8-5. Redshirt sophomore pitcher Ellie Smith started off the rally for her team as she singled to right field scoring redshirt sophomore outfielder Lauren Wedman.
Redshirt sophomore middle infielder Ashley Bradford was up next and did what she needed to do as she grounded out to the third baseman as freshman shortstop Ally Distler scored from third.
Redshirt sophomore third baseman Nicole Christensen singled to left field and advanced to second base on the throw that would score redshirt freshman infielder Aislyn Sharp who came into pinch run for Smith.
That would end up tying the game and redshirt senior outfielder and first baseman Sarah Staudle stepped up to the plate.
Staudle singled up the middle on a 2-1 count to give the Mavericks their second win of the day. Staudle came into the game to play first base in the top half of the inning after pinch hitting in the sixth.
The Maverick bats were alive as they played their first games of the season at the CMU softball field. They ended the night game with 14 hits in the 9-8 victory.
Redshirt sophomore pitcher Shea Mauser recorded her first win of the season when she came in for Smith in the fifth inning. Mauser started off strong as she threw to Distler who strapped on the gear in place of redshirt sophomore catcher Kaley Barker .
Mauser threw many first pitch strikes as she had three strikeouts in her appearance against CSM. She was able to not walk a batter while she was standing in the circle. She ended the day with throwing 48 pitches through three innings of work.
Smith started her day off by getting into a jam early and allowing three runs to cross the plate in the first inning for the Orediggers. She was able to get out of it then the Mavericks would cross home three times themselves.
Smith went four innings and allowed eight hits, eight runs, had four strikeouts and only had one earned run, The Mavericks in game two had a total of five errors.
The Mavericks were ready to play as they hit the field for game one against the Orediggers and it showed. CMU won by a score of 18-0 in only five innings.
The Mavericks got on a hot streak early as they scored 13 runs in the first two innings. CSM’s six errors would favor the Mavericks.They had 12 unearned runs meaning that the runs were scored off of errors or the runners advanced in play somewhere on an error.
Distler and Smith both homered in the fourth inning. Distler hit a dinger that Wedman would score on as well.
Redshirt junior pitcher Paige Adair was in the circle for CMU. Adair threw a complete game and would remain undefeated on the season. She had four strikeouts and two walks with only five hits from the Orediggers.
CMU and CSM will play the final two games of this series beginning at 11 A.M in Grand Junction, Colo.
