The Mavericks were able to dominate at the plate with three mercy rule wins over Black Hills State University (BHSU).

Colorado Mesa University (CMU) continues to see the ball well as they had 12 home runs over the weekend. They have also been able to come up with timely hits throughout the season and that continued into this past weekend.

The team has also seen stellar performances from their pitchers. Redshirt senior Paige Adair got two starts this past weekend and threw two complete games. In game one of the series, Adair had 13 strikeouts which was a career high for the Aztec, N.M native. She was also able to claim her tenth win of the season with the 5-1 victory.

The Mavericks got on the board early as redshirt junior designated player/pitcher Ellie Smith hit a home run that hit the scoreboard in left center field. Freshman infielder Myah Arrieta continued the scoring in the third,  as she doubled to right center allowing redshirt junior outfielder Lauren Wedman to score.

The Mavericks did not slow down as sophomore infielder Ava Fugate tripled to right center in the fourth scoring sophomore catcher Ally Distler as she had a very successful weekend at the plate as well. Fugate was able to come around to score as an infield error occurred. Redshirt sophomore outfielder Illiana Mendoza completed the Mavericks scoring in the sixth as she doubled scoring Nicole Christensen.

The Yellowjackets got on the board in the sixth as Crystal Amaral helped herself out as she was able to put a stop to Adair’s shutout with a solo homerun. Amaral moved to a 5-10 record on the season as a pitcher.

In game two, CMU’s bats came alive as they scored six runs in the first inning including three home runs. Junior infielder Ashley Bradford hit a home run to right field as she saw a pitch to drive her first swing of the game. Batting in the four hole, Distler was able to double, allowing  Arrieta to score. Distler then came around home on a two run home run from junior outfielder Brandi Hallar.

Christensen had the other home run for CMU in the first, another two run shot that would allow sophomore infielder Sarah Jorissen to score.

Bradford was not done yet as she helped the Mavericks get the 16-0 win as she hit another home run in the third. This time it was down the left field line scoring freshman Rylee Crouch as well.

The Mavericks bench was able to show their depth as they had four of the Mavericks 14 hits in the game. Aislyn Sharp was able to come in and help in a big way as she blasted a ball for a three run home run in the fourth.

Redshirt junior pitcher Shea Mauser got the start on the mound and only gave up three hits to the Yellowjackets. Mauser also had four strikeouts.

Smith got the start in game three where CMU would continue to shine defensively and offensively. Smith got the complete game win in a 9-1 victory.

Distler, Christensen and Fugate added to the Mavericks home run total for the weekend as Distler had a two run shot in the first that was a part of another six run first inning. Christensen hit her second home run of the weekend in the first.

Fugate a home run to add to make it a 7-0 game in the third inning.

In the fourth inning CMU had back-to-back-to-back doubles. Wedman started the double streak off for the team and then Bradford came up behind her with a double allowing Wedman to score.

The Mavericks got the “walk-off” mercy rule victory to finish out the series in the second game of Sunday’s double header.

Distler hit two home runs in Sunday’s late contest as she was in the designated player role. Jorissen hit the “walk-off” home run in the fifth as CMU won 8-0.

Adair got the start in the last game of the weekend for the Mavericks and put up another solid performance getting the shutout win.

The Mavericks will be on the road for the next two weeks as they face off against UCCS in a Friday and Saturday series this week. First pitch is set for April 15 at noon.
