The women’s wrestling team found some tough competition this last weekend when Colorado Mesa University traveled to Marshall, MO to compete in the Missouri Valley Open.

The Mavericks showed up and had three wrestlers place in their weight classes. As a team, CMU took sixth place in the open.

The 130-pound backet was highlighted by Cindy Zepeda who had the best placing of the day with a second-place finish. After seeing a bye in the first round Zepeda won by a fall over Hayden Lowe then moved on to compete against Shania Murray where she also won by a fall.

CMU had two wrestlers compete in the 101-pound weight class, freshmen Kaylie Catalano and Jennesis Martinez. Catalano took a fall in her first round and lost to Alaura Couch from Grand View University in the second round of the consolation bracket.

Martinez started her day off strong winning her first two matches by a fall and by a tech foul. In the quarterfinals Martinez lost based on decision to Iverly Navarro from University of Providence. In the consolation bracket she made it all the way to the fifth place match. She won by injury default in her last two matches and she earned fifth-place honors.

The Mavericks had two wrestlers as well in the 116-pound weight class Anja Tschohl and Aleen Gomez.

Tschohl made it to the quarterfinals before losing by decision. In her run for the quarterfinals, Tschohl won by a fall over Gabrielle Grimes, and a tech foul over Jenna Bacich. Tschohl lost in her quarterfinal match to Theresa Rankin from Mckendree University. Her consolation match was against Sugey Ceja from Tiffin University and lost by a fall.

Gomez fell in her opening round sending her straight to the consolation bracket where she faced two wrestlers from Tiffin University. First she faced Brook Richards and won by a fall then Ceja saw herself against another Maverick and won over a tech foul.

Marissa Gallegos placed sixth in the 123-pound bracket. She lost in the third round to Alexia Ward from Mckendree University. Gallegos then went on to win her first round match in consolation and then took another sound victory via a tech in her next match.

Sierra Brown Ton made her way onto the mat after not having the start she wanted against Wayland Baptist last weekend. Brown Ton lost in the first round she competed in on Sunday but bounced back and had three matches in consolations. After losing to Alex Enriquez from Life University in consolation she won over a tech foul over Rebekah Garcia from Lyon College. Another tech foul saw Brown Ton’s second win in consolation while wrestling another Maverick Sonya Nevis. Andrea Schlabach from the University of the Cumberlands took the winning streak away from Brown Ton in the fourth round of consolation by a fall.

The Mavericks will compete in Brownson Arena for the first time on Thursday, Nov. 21 in a duel against Midland University at 6 p.m.
