ICYMI: Mavericks sweep Chadron in first home series

Playing at home for the first time this season, the Colorado Mesa University softball team would sweep the Eagles of Chadron State College in their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) series.  

The Mavericks were coming off of a 2-3 weekend in the Cactus Classic Tournament in Tucson, Az. where they saw opponents in West Texas A&M, Western New Mexico, Saint Mary’s, Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M- Kingsville.  

With a 6-4 record the Mavericks came back to Grand Junction to face Chadron State.  

A walk off would start the Mavericks out on the right foot in this series. Senior Brooke Doumer came to the plate with Lauren Wedman on base. On the 0-2 count, Doumer singled through to center field to give the Mavericks their first home win.  

The winning continued in Game Two as CMU found the lead late and hung onto a 4-1 win. Doumer, again, secured the lead for her team with a two-run shot in the fifth inning.  

Sunday was a chillier day in Grand Junction, but bats were on fire with an the 8-4 CMU win. Bailey Kleespies gave the Mavericks the lead in the first. The third baseman knocked a three-run shot to left center to start this one off. Ann Marie Torres and Wedman would score on the homer. CMU accumulated 13 hits in the dub.

The second game of the Sunday doubleheader completed the first sweep of the season for CMU in a 13-3 game that was over in five innings.   

Kleespies hit a two RBI double and sophomore catcher Jordyn Hays hit a two-run homer in the same inning.  

Hays would add to her previous two run shot with another one but this time it would be a three run homerun. Torres and Kleespies would score. The three run shot to the center field bleachers put CMU up 9-3.  

Hays ended the day with a team-high five RBIs.  

Shea Mauser pitched in Games One and Four.  She improved her record to 6-1 after earning the two wins. In her first appearance, Mauser threw a complete game and allowed five hits and struck out five. Her second game would be no different. She had another complete game with eight hits and nine strikeouts.  

Paige Adair and Elle Smith started Games Two and Three. Adair struck out six over seven innings with three hits. While in the third game, Smith went five innings with three strikeouts and seven hits before Sarah Jorissen entered the game for the final two innings. Smith still would grab the win.  

The Mavericks will head back on the road to Pueblo to face Colorado State University-Pueblo Saturday and Sunday.
