Crystle Querol is a redshirt freshman mechanical engineering major on the Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Women’s Golf Team.
As a dedicated student, Querol plans her schoolwork around her tournament and practice schedule. Querol keeps a close eye on her schedule and writes everything down in her planner to keep a balance between student and athlete life.
Querol placed third leading the team to a third-place finish as well in the first tournament of the season. She has felt more consistent and confident about her golfing abilities. Querol has been golfing since she was ten, and she is excited to see her hard work finally paying off.
With a strange fall season of sports and uncertainty where COVID lies, Querol has been stepping up to help out the team.
“Well, I’m not a freshman anymore, so a lot of the older girls have trusted me more with responsibilities. Like making sure the freshmen have a ride to practice and making sure everyone knows where practices are,” Querol said.
Querol recounted how she was feeling closer to her other teammates this year and has been taking on some leadership roles within the team as well this year.
“Our two captains are graduate students. So, they’re relying on me and my other teammate to keep it going next year when they leave. So, they just have me do the small responsibilities, like, go check-in in the pro-shot to make sure like we have a tee time today, and stuff like that,” Querol said.
Querol’s friend and roommate, Nicole Shirley had nothing but admiration and humorous things to say about her friend.
“She’s a really fun person to hang around, she’s super funny, she knows how to light-up [a room], and she’s super fun to be around. You can talk to her a lot of the time because she’s a really good listener,” Shirley said.
Querol will continue to bring her contagious positive attitude and great team spirit to the rest of their tournaments in the golf season.
Before leaving for Texas, Querol described the COVID restrictions they would face while there. They had to get a COVID test before and after the West Texas A&M Fall Invitational.
“Then when we’re there, we’re not allowed to explore the area, we just hang out in the hotel and go straight to the golf course,” Querol said. “In our upcoming tournament, I know their rule is we can’t play with other schools. So, we’ll just play as a team, and then just count our scores, and then the team with the lowest score at the end of the day wins. So, that’s a little bit different.”
As far as the rest of the season goes, Querol hopes her team wins a tournament, and that this fall season prepares them for the big RMAC tournament in the spring.
The Maverick’s final tournament of the fall season is the Skyhawk Fall Women’s Intercollegiate on Oct. 19. at 8 a.m.
