The Associated Student Government discussed the first of three bills to amend their bylaws, which would define basic requirements for any senator and the president, vice president and student trustee.
The first point of contention was regarding the requirements for engineering students to become senators. All senators, with the exception of the Montrose and Western Colorado Community College senators, have to be full-time CMU students.
Since engineering students officially become a University of Colorado-Boulder student after their first two years, without a change including engineering students in this exception, none could run for ASG.
The second point of contention was regarding the stipends that both the president and vice president of ASG receive. The proposed bylaw change would set the president’s stipend at $6,000 per academic year, and the vice president’s at $3,600 per academic year.
Senator Jeff Vela proposed a provision to the bylaws that would allow these stipends to be amended during a biennial year, though not during any other.
Senate Leader Sam Gaasch suggested Vela propose this provision during a meeting of the bylaws committee, which will meet outside the general assembly meetings to attempt to streamline the process. Though no formal amendment was made during the meeting, the majority of discussion seemed in favor of Vela’s proposition.
According to Vice President Gabby Gile, ASG will limit discussion time on each bylaw bill to 40 minutes per meeting to prevent meetings from lasting as long as they did during the constitutional amendment process. Therefore, the majority of discussion and amendments is to happen during these meetings and then reviewed with the entire Senate body during general assembly meetings.
Since each bylaw change must be seen three times on the floor before being passed, the three bylaw bills were all on the agenda during the meeting. Only the first was discussed, and the second and third were tabled where they will be discussed respectively during the next two weeks.
ASG hopes to pass all three at the end of three weeks.
