Colorado Mesa University’s volleyball team had two home games over the weekend against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponents. After the Mavericks fell in three sets on Friday to No. 14 Regis University, the team responded on Saturday by sweeping Chadron State.
The Mavericks held with the Rangers on Friday night, losing the first two sets close (25-23 and 25-20). In the third set, however, the Rangers were in full control winning the set 25-15 to seal the match win.
The Mavericks finished with a .113 hitting percentage while the Rangers were finished at .386 on the night. In the initial set, the Mavericks finished with more kills (16-15) than the Rangers. The final two sets were the opposite, however, with Regis finishing better in both those sets (11-8, 14-9).
In total, the Mavericks won two team categories in the match. They finished with one more ace (3-2) and one more dig (38-37). Regis won the other four main statistical categories in points (53-37), kills (40-33), blocks (11-1) and assists (37-28).
Samantha Ritter finished a Maverick high 24 assists. The team leader in digs was Taylor Woods with 12.
CMU was able to bounce back from the loss with a clean sweep of CSC on Saturday. The Mavericks ran away with each of the sets, winning them 25-13, 25-15 and 25-13.
The Mavericks dominated each of the statistical categories on the night. CMU finished with the lead in points (54-25), kills (41-22), aces (7-2), blocks (6-1), assists (37-21) and digs (41-35). CSC finished with a .034 hitting percentage on the night while the Mavericks improved on their percentage from the night before, increasing it to .374.
Ritter led the team in two categories for the Mavericks, leading in assists (26) and digs (12). Mackenzie Edwards also made her name known on the night, finishing with a game-high in kills (13) and aces (4).
CMU moved to 9-3 on the season, with a 3-1 conference record. The Mavericks will remain at home for their next two matchups this weekend. Their first test will be against Adams State University on Friday. It is followed up with Fort Lewis College on Saturday. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.
