The Colorado Mesa University women’s soccer team was looking for their third win in a row on Thursday as they closed out non-conference play. The game looked to be going into overtime until a goal in the 86th minute changed that. Lauren Thompson took a pass from Halie Bergeron to score her second goal of the season. CMU came away with the 2-1 victory over Rollins College.
The Sailors were first to strike with a goal in the 16th minute to give them the early 1-0 lead. Then in the 39th minute, it was a shot by CMU that a Sailors’ defender redirected into their own net that tied the game at 1-1.
The Mavericks outshot the Sailors 16-11 on the day, including 12-2 in shots on goal. RC finished with more fouls (11-4), corner kicks (5-2) and saves (10-1) in the game.
Jessica Jolley received her third consecutive start for the Mavericks, and she came away with her third win of the season. Jolley played all 90 minutes for CMU and allowed 1 goal and made 1 save.
The Mavericks will now start Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play, with their first matchup coming on Sunday against Westminster. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. in Salt Lake City, Utah.
