Following wins against St. Edwards, Lubbock Christian University and the top-seeded Angelo State University, the Maverick baseball team was just one win away from making it to the Division II world series. The team standing in their way was Arkansas-Fort Smith.
Thanks to an offensive outburst from the Mavericks, Colorado Mesa University came away with the 8-1 victory to advance them on to the next round. CMU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a Kyle Serrano double that drove in PJ Gonzalez. The Mavericks would add another two runs in the second and one in the third before taking a commanding 6-0 lead in the fourth thanks to a Zach McLeod solo shot to left field and a sac fly from JJ Carr. CMU would add another two runs in the seventh inning to solidify the victory.
Tanner Rempel led the team with 3 RBIs on the day while Serrano was a perfect 4-4 with 2 runs scored. Kyle Leahy was lights out on the mound going 6 innings allowing only 6 hits, no walks, and no runs to get him his 13th win of the year. The win also gave the Mavericks their 8th consecutive win.
With the victory, the team moved to 48-10 on the year and will head down to Grand Prairie, Texas to take on Quincy University in the first round of the World Series. Quincy enters the game with a 37-21 record on the year. The game is set for Sunday at 8 p.m.
The tournament is now a double elimination tournament for the eight remaining teams. The winner of the game on Sunday will play the winner of St. Thomas Aquinas College and UC San Diego on May 30 at 7 p.m. while the loser will play the loser of those two teams at 3 p.m. on May 30.
