Colorado Mesa University’s Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) will be hosting their 10th annual golf tournament on Saturday, April 29. The tournament is being held at Adobe Creek Golf Course and will be the club’s main source of revenue to help send them to nationals come June.
“Our tournament is mainly geared towards sending our team to nationals to compete in all of our different academic competitions,” State President Riley Brodie said.
Some of the different academic competitions that the team will be competing in include: accounting or finance tests, presenting on ethical business issues and impromptu speaking assignments. These will be paired with the club making connections with other FBLA-PBL members from around the country.
This idea to host an annual golf tournament to help the club raise money to go and compete at nationals came from one of the club’s leaders at the time.
“I believe it was our treasurer 10 years ago,” Brodie said. “He had come up with the idea because he played golf and he thought it would be a really good way to raise money for our team, as well as get our name out there around the community.”
To compete in the tournament, it costs $400 per team or $100 for an individual. These fees cover the 18 holes, two golf carts for the four-person team, lunch and admission to the awards ceremony, and silent auction following the tournament.
There is also an opportunity for businesses to sponsor a hole during the tournament, and those prices range depending on if the organization decides to buy the bronze, silver or gold level.
“Last year we had eight teams, so that is 32 people, and we had 18 sponsors,” Brodie said. “This year I think as of right now we have 10 teams, so about 40 people, and then plus all the sponsors we are trying to bring in right now.”
With nationals being the primary goal of this golf tournament, it is not the only thing that the club hopes to accomplish. FBLA-PBL prides themselves on community service projects that are designed to create relationships between local businesses around the community, which is another main goal of this event.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and is followed by the tee off at 9 a.m.
