I wanted to include my interests, as well as future plans, when I chose what to study in college. To encompass those goals, I decided to major in Political Science and minor in Environmental Science.
So far, it has been an amazing experience. All of my professors are incredibly knowledgeable in their field and have taught me so much. Along with that, I know that I have somewhere to go for all of my questions about class, school plans or even my future goals. Each professor has given me wisdom that has shaped me into a better student.
Political Science classes change from semester to semester, with some classes being offered only once a year or every other year. This does not make it harder to graduate, as there are many options to fill requirements. Instead, it gives students the chance to find new niche subjects in the field, and gives professors a break so that they can feel refreshed with new classes.
All classes have either been in Houston Hall or Escalante Hall, which means I have an incredibly easy time getting around, and never have to worry about being late to my classes. Along with that, a familiar environment makes students feel comfortable.
The best part of Political Science is that the professors are there because they want students to succeed, and they actively listen to complaints about classes, and the major in general, to improve students’ experience. They use the feedback to adjust assignments, include more explanations and, overall, make the classes more enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the department is small and that can make it difficult to find classes. Most classes are only offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which can cause conflicts when you want to take 18 or more credit hours. However, there is an upside to the small classes, you get to know your teacher and the other students pretty well. By the end, it feels like you’ve made a lot of new friends that you get to see pretty much every day.
The professors in both Political and Environmental Sciences keep students engaged and it is easy to tell that they care tremendously about the school and its students.
In Environmental Science, the professors are quick to respond to any inquiries and will work with you if an emergency happens. It is clear that they want you to succeed in class and will give you every opportunity to do so.
The department has three professors that work hard to make students understand the subjects and encourage them to try new things. There are a lot of emails about job and internship opportunities that help students find what they are looking for. Along with that, the professors will help you to apply for the job if you need advice.
Again, a small department comes with some unique issues, including finding classes with available seats, and ones that work with your schedule.
Overall, Colorado Mesa University has provided me with a great atmosphere to learn and professors I can connect to. The size of the school makes it ideal for students who need a more one- on-one learning environment. Help can come from peers, or your teachers, as both are happy to assist.
