The Colorado Mesa University baseball team welcomed 14 Cal Baptist University to Grand Junction, Colo. for a four-game set.
The Mavericks dropped the first game of the series Thursday evening 7-3.
In a frustrating game where the Mavericks left eleven men on base, a 9th inning comeback came up short.
Tyler Day was out-dueled by Lancers’ pitcher Garett King. Day was ousted in 4.1 innings after he had given up three runs on two hits. He also struck out four before he was replaced by Jett Wodiuk. King lasted 6.2 innings before he gave way to Brody Robinson. Robinson picked up his third save of the year.
The Lancers’ struck first after a three-run homer from first baseman John Glenn. Bryce Macy added another run in the 5th inning with a solo home run. Tyler Johnson singled in Kyle Oyama in the 7th inning to push the lead 5-0. The Mavericks responded in the bottom of the 7th when Tanner Nieslanik scored on a wild pitch. Johnson added two more runs with a single in the 9th inning that drove in Andrew Bash and John Glenn.
After a leadoff double from Garrett Ball, Kyle Serrano drove him in with a single drawing the Mavericks closer. Will Dixon pinch hit for Andrew Contreras and delivered a two-out double that drove in Serrano.
The Mavericks have a doubleheader tomorrow as games two and three are set to be played starting at noon at Suplizio Field.
