David Tann started right where he left off from the week before.
The Colorado Mesa football team headed to Silver City, N.M. to take on the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys who were looking for just about anything to try and build some momentum after last year.
That was not the case as the Mavericks went into town and made sure they left no doubt about who the better team was. The Mavericks ended up steamrolling the Cowboys by a score of 87-14.
After a first possession turnover by quarterback Sean Rubalcaba the Cowboys were able to get on the board and take a quick 7-0 lead.
The Mavericks responded with a quick two-and-a-half- minute drive that tied the game at 7-7.
It was only the beginning for the Mavericks as their next drive was finished off with a touchdown run by Rubalcaba and gave the Mavericks a lead they never relinquished.
Just after the second quarter began, Jonathon Beverly was able to find the end zone to add to the score putting the Mavericks up 21-7.
The Cowboys scored their second touchdown of the day on an 11-yard run by running back Jairan Manning cutting the lead to 21-14.
That is all that the Cowboys would get the rest of the day as the Mavericks began to lay their assault on the Cowboys.
The Mavericks would end up scoring 66 points straight and most of them came on the ground.
“They’ve got a young young football team, they’ve had a lot of injuries accumulate and after that we just ran our base stuff and it kept breaking for big plays,” head coach Russ Martin said.
Tann finished the day just after the third quarter had begun while he had 273 yards on 27 attempt. He also scored four more times, giving him 11 in the last two games.
The Mavericks as a team finished the day with more than 900 yards of offense while more than 700 of it came on the ground.
Dorian Williams added 131 yards on 13 attempts with two touchdowns of his own.
Adding to the yardage was Brett Ojiyi, Rubalcaba and Beverly added touchdowns on the day as well.
Josh Brown added a 90- yard punt return to the scoring column, and wide receiver Marcus Hines added a 65-yar strike to aid in the win.
The Mavericks scored a total of 12 touchdowns on the afternoon, breaking the previous school record of 11. The Mavericks also broke records for rushing yards (708) and total yards (933).
“The momentum carried over to this team,” Martin said. “I was very pleased because of the way we finished the first half in particular and then the way we opened the second half.”
The Mavericks will head back home to Stocker Stadium to take on South Dakota School of Mines 5-4 (4-4 RMAC) on Nov. 5 at 1 p.m.
“We’re going to put all our focus on Mines because that game for us is basically an opportunity to win a conference championship,” Martin said.
