Homecoming week attracts CMU alumni and families to celebrate being part of the CMU family. Various activities are offered through the school during Homecoming week each year to bring the school and the community closer together.
Many businesses located in downtown Grand Junction show their support for the university by participating in Mav Month.
Downtown Grand Junction partners with CMU to welcome returning alumni, families and friends. Various shops and businesses offer discounts to any CMU student with a CMU ID “mav” card or any person wearing Maverick apparel. Some businesses that participate in the offers include Gelato Junction, Fat Cat Pottery and Pollux Clothing.
Discounts vary from 10-20 percent off an item. Some also offer gift cards or coupons of up to $5 off.
Fat Cat Pottery offers a 10 percent discount. The owner, Jo Kelly, offers this discount all year long, not just during Mav Month.
“It is important for students to have creative outlets,” Kelly said. “School is stressful so students should have something to ease their minds.”
Kelly has helped out with CMU PAC and other groups on campus. As a new business, Kelly loves the sense of community associated with the university and the town.
Hannah Smith of Gelato Junction wishes more CMU students would participate in the discounts offered downtown.
“Not many students know about our discounts,” Smith said. “We hardly ever have anyone come in with their mav cards.”
