Colorado Mesa University’s women’s rugby faced off against Air Force Academy and scored big, putting up more than 100 points on the board in route to a win. The teams faced off in a friendly match instead of a league match, giving both squads a chance to organize and coach the players as the game went along. It was a different match than usual. The teams played five 20-minute quarters instead of two 40-minute halves. The increase in time gave the players a chance at more reps as they look to improve and finish the season strong.
The Mavericks put up big points during the first three quarters, showing everyone the offensive capabilities they’ve shown all year long. It wasn’t until the fifth quarter that halted the strong Maverick offense. Air Force put their “A-team” players into the match during the quarter, giving them a chance at some run before the match came to an end. The Falcons showed their might and began to score at a rapid pace against the Mavs.
“Our defense can still improve. I know putting up 100 points means we got an awesome offense, but that’s pretty much because Air Force didn’t touch the ball,” Head coach Mackenzie Lewis said.
Although injuries played a part during the match, the Mavericks did with they do best: play together. Their comradery off the field is a reason why the team is showing so much on-field success.
The Mavericks have played competitive matches all year. A friendly against the Falcons gave them a chance to evaluate their weaknesses while also showing off their strengths. Lewis is ecstatic to see her players at a high level but knows they are capable of even more success.
“We still need to recognize and slide faster. It’s been an interesting season,” Lewis said. “We have great team camaraderie, but our focus and execution has been tough. They played a tough game today. There is still a lot of work to be done to be competing with the top D-1 programs. They are firing on all cylinders when they need to be so that’s awesome.”
Lewis has high expectations for the team, and she knows the players can reach them. The team can be a force to be reckoned with if they are able to capture a playoff spot.
The team will play Idaho State University on Oct. 21 as they continue to make their playoff push.
