The Colorado Mesa University men’s golf team concluded their fall season at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Fall Invite in Durango, Colo. at the par 71 (6727) yard Hillcrest Golf Club.
The Mavericks finished in fifth place, out of ten teams. Overall for the tournament, the Mavericks finished 16-over par carding 293 in the first round and 291 in the second round (584).
The tournament was scheduled to be a three round 54-holes, but the weather postponed play in the first round, due to snow. The second round was also delayed because of the cold conditions overnight and the third round was canceled.
“The course was tough with the weather and they had some tough greens,” Head coach Matt Ward said. “The guys did pretty well to manage scores around even par.”
Grant Olinger finished in a tie for 8 place. Olinger had a solid first round of one-over (72) and then a one-under (70) in the second round, finishing at even par.
Aidan Thain shot one-over in both rounds to finish at two-over for the tournament and a thirteenth place finish.
Troy Dangler finished in a tie for 16 place. Dangler shot two-over (73) in the first round and three-over (74) in the second round, for a five-over finish.
Trey Lambrecht finished in a tie for 36 place. Carding five-over (76) and four-over (75).
Ben Nichols shot six-over (77) and four-over (75) to finish in a tie for 38 place.
“I think it was kind of a normal event for us, where we kind of dig ourselves in a little hole in the first round and dig out of it a bit in the second round and it’s kind of what we’ve been doing all year,” Ward said.
Colorado State-Pueblo took the tournament with a three-under finish, four shots better than second place finisher, UCCS.
“We’re going in the right direction, so it’s certainly a positive thing to look at,” Ward said.
