The Colorado Mesa University men’s golf team entered the second half of the fall season at WNMU Fall Intercollegiate tournament in Goodyear, Ariz. The Mavericks finished 13 overall as a team.
The Mavericks struggled in the first round carding 300 (+12). Round two was an eight-shot improvement carding 292 (+4). Then a two-shot improvement in the final round 290 (+2).
“It’s a good sign to see,” Head coach Matt Ward said. “We’ve got a team that is pretty inexperienced and young so to see them to put it back together and finish better than we started is always a good thing. I think they’ll continue to improve as the year goes on.”
Aidan Thain had the highest individual finish for the Mavericks. Thain shot an even par (72) in the first round then four-over (76) in the second round. Thain had a great final round shooting three-under (69) to finish at one-over for the tournament (217) in a tie for 24 place.
“Aidan has a lot of talent his second round was a little rough, but that’s part of the learning experience,” Ward said.
Grant Olinger finished in a tie for 26 place for the tournament. Olinger Shot one-over (73) in the first round, two-over (74) in the second round and a one-under (71) in the final round.
Kyle Pearson finished in a tie for 40 place (+6). Shooting four-over (76), two-under (70) and four-over (70).
“[Pearson] had a really good first round,” Ward said. “His second round was good too, so he’s learning how to play through the tiring long day.”
Texas A&M – Commerce and CSU – San Marcos finished in a tie for first with a 13-under par finish. The trophy was given to Commerce because their non-counting score was lower.
The men’s team will next compete at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Fall Invite on Oct. 9-10 in Durango, Colo. at Hillcrest Country Club.
