The Lady Mavericks were in full control in their game against the University of Wyoming, dismantling their opponent 47-12 on Sunday. The Mavericks had a strong defense and an efficient offense during the game. The Cowgirls had great tackling early in the game, but the Mavericks wouldn’t let that stop them from gaining momentum.
After each team made clutch tackles near the goal line, it was the Mavericks who struck first. Involved in a scrum, CMU used that to their advantage and pushed the pile near the goal line. They passed it back out with only inches to go and grounded the ball passed the goal line to make it 5-0. The Mavs had no problem nailing the 2-point conversion. That gave the Mavs some momentum, as they possessed the ball early and often, making smart passes and no mistakes.
The Cowgirls responded with a try and conversion of their own to tie the game at 7-7. They willed their way through the Mavericks defense, making quality passes from sideline to sideline to reach the goal line and score a try. After that, it was all Mavericks.
The Cowgirls defense began to show vulnerability and the Mavericks took every advantage they could. Every Maverick player showed burst, blistering their way through the defense for large downfield gains. Once they were close to the goal line, their team qualities began to shine. Each pass after rucking was a designed effort that enabled the Mavs to inch closer and closer to the goal line. The Mavericks executed it perfectly and scored two tries with successful conversions to take a commanding 21-7 lead.
The Mavericks wouldn’t let the Cowgirls respond. The latter continuously pushed the ball past midfield, only to meet the brick wall of the Mavericks defense. They continued to make quick tackles at the point of attack, limiting Wyoming’s opportunities. With 21:25 left on the clock, Wyoming was able to take advantage of good position on the field and scored another try to shorten the deficit to 21-12.
Wyoming’s leaky defense began to unravel. CMU started to utilize the sidelines more and attacked the defense from the outside. With the Mavericks displaying a strong passing attack, there was no stopping this offense. CMU scored five more tries, showing off their speed and teamwork to put the game away.
The win pushes the Mavericks to 2-0-1. They will look to continue their excellent play on Oct. 14 at Air Force Academy.
