From their warm up, line up and home court advantage, CMU’s women’s volleyball team was destined for a victory. On Tuesday, the Mavericks walked away from their first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) game of the year with a win over Western State Colorado University.
Hattie Gianinetti showed the Mountaineers they were playing on their turf with a statement kill on the opening point in the first set. The Mavericks went on to win the set 25-17.
The second set of the evening was no different than the one prior. The Mavericks dug, set and scored, beating the mountaineers 25-15.
Mackenzie Edwards lead the team with 10 kills that night followed by the Gianinetti twin towers front row force. Hattie brought in 9 kills while Megan Gianinetti put down 8 along with three service aces.
The third set was won by the mavericks (25-15). CMU ended the night the same way they began with success. The opposing team was unable to gain points on the scoreboard fast enough to keep up with speed set by the offense of the Mavericks.
“Jitters were there a little bit but I definitely felt like we were in control,” Head coach Dave Fleming said.
Going into their second RMAC game of the season Fleming hopes they can continue to improve.
“Just trying to get better every match clean up something’s like blocking errors in the net and dealing with those Jitters in game 1,” Fleming said.
The team will be taking on Westminster in Salt Lake City, Utah this Friday.
