In the digital age that we find ourselves in, social media is more than just various platforms–it’s a catalyst for empowerment, unity and progress.
We often question whether social media is “good” for us, and I’m here to explain that it absolutely can be! As college students, we rely on different media platforms for a variety of uses and with these outlets we could see ourselves being much better off not just educationally, but mentally as well.
I’ve pulled together various reasons why social media is an important staple in many college students’ lives:
– Connectivity to Campus: Social Media allows various platforms for students to stay connected, allowing them to know what is happening on campus. With good advertising implementation from universities, students can attend on-campus events and be more involved in student life activities.
– Communication to Home Life: It’s never been easier for students to contact their family and friends from college, as it is now. Social media has made this possible. You are now able to pick up your phone and see what your family and friends are doing from your dorm room, and chat with them about it any time. This is a luxury that the generations before us have never experienced.
– Mental Health Awareness/Support: Social media has allowed for information to spread faster than ever before. Due to this, mental health awareness and support groups are within reach of anyone with a device. According to the National Library of Medicine, “70% of adolescents and young adults use general social networking platforms as sources of health information.” This is invaluable for all of our fellow college students who struggle with mental health and are looking for a positive outlet.
– Free Expression: Every media medium allows students to express themselves in any way they desire. Whether it’s setting a theme for a profile or showing off your aesthetic, social media is a place for you to thrive creatively and that’s what college is all about!
– Networking/Collaboration Opportunities: As stated in an opinion article by the Harvard Business Review, by Doug Camplejohn, “I’m a big believer in the power of social media to diversify and evolve one’s network, build on the strength of weak ties, and nurture relationships over time.” Social media opens unlimited doors to potential jobs, internships, and collaboration opportunities. Tell me why you wouldn’t want this unlimited resource at your fingertips.
Needless to say, social media has always been and will continue to be, an important tool for students at universities. When implemented correctly into each of our lives, platforms should be an important tool to help everyone flourish. It is up to each of us to monitor our relationship with social media and utilize it!
