On Saturday, Colorado Mesa’s baseball team picked up right where they left off Friday, once again routing Colorado Christian University 14-1 in game one of the double-header.Out of seven innings played, CMU scored in all but one. They began the afternoon with back-to-back three run innings in the first and second. They have outscored the Cougars 27-1 in the two games this series.
Third baseman JJ Carr went 2-4 in the game with 3 RBIs and a stolen base. Right fielder Bligh Madris was a perfect 3-3 at bat with an RBI of his own to go along with his double and triple. In total CMU had 16 hits in the game.
The Mavs also capitalized on mistakes made by the Cougars. An overthrown pickoff attempt allowed Bligh Madris to score from second base in the bottom of the second inning. A couple more defensive mistakes led to Maverick runs as well.
Success on the basepaths was also key for CMU. The Mavs stole all four bases they attempted to steal.
Pitching wise, JR McDermott was not stellar, however he was effective. The Preseason Pitcher of the Year for the RMAC allowed seven hits, but only one run. John Beaudrie came in to close and provided the only two strikeouts in the game for CMU.
The Mavs will play another game against CCU tonight before wrapping up the series on Sunday
