The Mavericks dominated the Saints 25-9 to finish their spring break trip on a strong note.
Colorado Mesa University (CMU) assisted 13 of their 25 goals in the game as they always kept their head up looking for an open teammate. The Mavericks had 20 different players register at least one point against Flagler College (FC).
Freshman midfielder/attackman JJ Brummett led CMU in scoring with five points in the game. He scored two goals on four shots, and he dished out three assists to help the Mavericks win.
The Mavericks got off to a slow start in the first quarter as they fell behind 0-2 with 34 seconds left in the quarter. Freshman attackman/midfielder Ethan Points got CMU on the board with 10 seconds left in the first quarter as he snuck up the backside of the defense, caught a pass from sophomore midfielder Sergio Pelayo and threw a fake before finishing.
Sophomore attackman/midfielder Hunter Holcomb tied the game up at two just over a minute into the second quarter. Tyler Douglass gave the Saints the lead back as he scored with 6:58 left in the second quarter on a man-up opportunity that was set up by a 30-seconds pushing penalty.
Redshirt sophomore midfielder James Steinke answered with a goal of his own to tie the game up at 3 with 5:03 left in the first half. CMU’s offense exploded after Steinke’s goal as they scored six straight goals in the final five minutes of the second quarter to take a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.
The Mavericks started the second half on a hot start as Pelayo and Points each scored to put the Mavericks up 11-3. Geraint Shaw answered for the Saints with 7:48 left in the third quarter, and FC scored two more goals in the next three minutes.
Each time the Saints scored in the third quarter, the Mavericks answered with a goal of their own until there was 4:07 left in the quarter. Graduate student midfielder Jake Brummett helped CMU win the faceoff, and Brummett pushed in transition off the win to put a shot in the back of the net.
Brummett’s goal queued a four-goal run for CMU and two goals came from faceoff men along with a goal from freshman defender Caden Hathaway to put CMU up 17-6 with 2:02 left in the third quarter. Shaw ended the third quarter on a positive note for the Saints as he buried a shot with two seconds left in the third quarter.
The Saints scored their final two goals of the game in the opening five minutes of the fourth quarter to bring FC within nine goals. The Maverick’s offense wasn’t done just yet as redshirt sophomore attackman Braden Lowe and Hathaway each scored their second goal of the game to put CMU up 20-9 with 10 minutes left in the game.
The Mavericks scored five more goals to bring their total to 25 and freshman midfielder/faceoff man Mike Edwards scored the final goal of the game for CMU and the first of his career.
Steinke was the Maverick’s second-leading scorer with four points, and he picked up five ground balls in the win. He scored two goals and recorded two assists.
Redshirt sophomore goalie Nolan Hoffman made his presence felt in between the pipes in his first game returning from an injury. He compiled a career-high of 17 saves in 53 minutes of play.
The Maverick’s next game is Saturday, April 2 at 12:00 p.m. against Division III opponent, Colorado College in their second home game of the year.
