Lady Gaga, bravo! Encore!
Some of us dream of standing on top of the world, and when you are Lady Gaga, you can do just that. Okay, maybe not the world, but certainly the top of Houston’s NRG Stadium. Gaga, singing “God Bless America” and jumping off the stadium’s top, started the halftime show in a killer way.
When Gaga was announced as this year’s halftime show performer, I must admit I was hesitant. Gaga is known for being weird and risqué, and I was worried about the number of young eyes that watch the Super Bowl. I was prepared for lots of skin and promiscuous dance moves. But Gaga, in all her glory, kept it professional, classy, highly entertaining, superbly glittery and Gaga-esque.
From start to finish, Lady Gaga had the room’s attention at my Super Bowl party. For 13 minutes, Lady Gaga passionately performed. Not allowing for the adrenaline rush to get the better of her, she harnessed energy and excitement and gave the viewers an inspiring performance to remember. Lady Gaga’s performance showed off her vocal prowess and diverse musical skills, not to mention her physical agility when she ran upstairs in those heels while singing. There was only one thing missing: Beyoncé making a surprise entrance during “Telephone.”
I personally appreciated Lady Gaga’s patriotic start. With all the division in our nation, it was wonderful to have a night where we all gathered around our TVs and yelled about football instead of politics. Make no mistake, however; Gaga’s performance did have political undertones. She said in her pre-game interview, “The only statements that I’ll be making during the halftime show are the ones that I have been consistently making during my career. I believe in a passion for inclusion, I believe in the spirit of equality.”
But enough politics, let’s talk fashion! Lady Gaga’s wardrobe for the halftime show was a perfect marriage of glitz, glam, Gaga and football. Starting in a long-sleeved leotard suit of armor, with intense eye makeup and jewels, Gaga was surprisingly modest. Even when she switched into her glittery high waisted undies and bejeweled football shoulder pad crop top, Gaga remained relatively covered. And, can I just say, I was beyond impressed with her abs! She received some flak from body shamers for her abs having a mini, teeny-tiny pouch over her high waisted undies, but those people had to be simply jealous of how toned she truly was!
From jewels to drones, Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl LI halftime performance was top notch in entertainment value. All that’s left: mic drop. Oh wait, Gaga already did that.
