Students requesting a lift from MavRides on Fridays may find themselves looking at the smiling faces of Associated Student Government President Beau Flores and Vice President Angel Bautista. The ASG executives will drive for MavRides every Friday night until the end of the semester as a means to raise money for student clubs.
Flores said the two of them are, “going to do a MavRide every single Friday. And whichever club volunteers on that day will get our van compensation, so that our van will go to that club for that day. It won’t come to us at all.”
Flores said that clubs come to ASG regularly asking for money and other support to help them succeed. “So we’re going to take a small step towards clubs and say, ‘okay, we’ll do one MavRide car.’ It’s not a lot, but I think in the long run it shows that we care, that we want clubs to do what they want. Want to fundraise? we’ll help.”
“This is just a small stepping stone to solve a problem that’s been going on for the past years and it’s just setting the table up for the future. Whatever we do right now is going to lead to the next administration, hopefully, to carry this forward to supporting clubs and organizations outside of just writing a check for them,” Bautista said. “Showing them the face and helping them do the work. Being there for them not only as a source of income, but to really help them increase morale.”
Flores said that he and Bautista will continue driving on Fridays and donating the money to clubs at least to the end of the semester and gave credit to MavRides Director Dale Young for working with them on the project. “I want to thank Dale for allowing this opportunity for us to better students,” Flores said.
