Colorado Mesa University is thriving with raw athletic talent.
The campus is overtaken by superior competition and high expectations. When asking around, and talking with some of our very own athletes, most teams are expecting quite a successful season. Here are three teams you need to pay attention to in 2019-20.
Football will be returning to a dominating status, women’s basketball’s blooming per usual and teams like cycling will be given the recognition they deserve.
The CMU football team is trying to return to prominence. Over the last three seasons, they’ve accumulated a frightening record of 25-9 but finished 7-4 last season.
Led by senior defensive back, Darian Turner, and senior quarterback, Rope Ruel, the Mavericks are looking pretty good this upcoming season. Although Turner sat out of the 2018 season due to injury, he is shaping up to have another impactful season. Finishing the 2017 season with 42 solo tackles and three interceptions. Another stand out athlete is wide-out Peter Anderson. The 5’10 wide receiver finished the season with a very impressive 67 receptions and a total of 1,344 receiving yards, a CMU single-season record.
Head Coach Russ Martin is entering his eighth year at the helm and has contributed immensely to the Mavericks success and the growth as a program.
Another team that will hopefully have another magical year is women’s basketball. Coming off one of the most successful seasons in the program’s history at CMU, the Mavericks plan on bringing home the goods yet again.
With an outstanding record of 17-1 at home last year as well as winning the RMAC regular season and tournament championship, it would be wise not to bet against Head Coach Taylor Wagner’s squad. Someone to keep your eye on is guard, Sydni Brandon. She averaged 7.5 points per game on the season and topped it off with a First Team All-RMAC selection and the RMAC Tournament MVP title. Also looking to have another successful season is forward, Kelsey Siemons. With a total of 792 in-game minutes played, the Tucson native will look to be one of the Mavericks’ primary scorers.
CMU also has just added the addition of three new transfer students to their rosters. This could play a huge contributing factor to the hopeful future triumphs throughout the season.
The last team on the radar is the cycling team. They are filled with talented and high-caliber riders…this is the team to beat this year.
The Mavericks have been crushing the scene, bringing home numerous national championships within the last couple years. With many returning cyclists such as national champion, Gwen Gibson and commanding rider, Liam Earl, things are looking bright for this club team.
Each year is considered a success for the CMU athletic department, and this year is looking like it will be no different.
