The Colorado Mesa University volleyball team is on a roll, with the last six games logged as wins, the Mavericks are looking strong this year. Their sixth win was and most recent win against Western State (WSCU) came in a dominating three-set sweep.
The Mavericks dominated in every aspect of the game and only felt the heat during the second set where WSCU was only three points from winning. The first set was a whopping 25-13 and the final was still safely spaced with 25-17. By the end of the night, CMU ended up scoring 20 more total points than Western State.
CMU had a total of 36 kills, 13 more than WCSU. Of those kills, Mackenzie Edwards was the clear leader with 14, followed by Camille Smith with seven. In regard to digs, Taylor Woods lead with 16 out of the 43 total and Katie Scherr followed with 10. Samantha Ritter and Ara Norwood lead the team in assists with 17 and 14 to account for 91 percent of the total 34.
The Mavericks hit an impressive.202 hitting percentage during the course of the night while Mountaineers hit a negative .10.
CMU remains undefeated at home and improved to 8-3 overall after Tuesday’s victory. The team will have to wait until Sept. 21 before they get another chance to play at home. For now, it is back on the road to play Westminster College and Dixie State University in Utah on Sept 14-15.
Last season against Westminster, CMU won both games against the Griffins in what were both three-set sweeps. This will also be the first set of games against Dixie State for the Mavericks.
