Colorado Mesa University’s (CMU) softball team has added yet another two wins to the start of the season, making it a total four in 24 hours.
On Saturday, the Mavericks faced off against MSU-Denver (MSUD) and Texas A&M-Commerce (TAMC). The games took place in Rio Rancho, N.M for the second straight day.
While there were no more 20-point leads this time, the Mavericks still managed to pull off some thrilling numbers: beating MSUD 8-5 and TAMC 14-6.
“Today was a trying game because the wind was blowing so hard,” Head coach Ben Garcia said, “There were dropped balls on both sides from it.”
Despite the weather, CMU still showed their talent early. Starting with MSUD, the Mavs accomplished two runs in the top of the first which went uncontested.
The third inning saw CMU score yet again. It started with an RBI by Zoe Pakes and was then followed by AnnMarie Torres and Zoe Pakes scoring on errors made by Metro State Then Hailey Hinson sent in an RBI to increase the Mavericks lead 6-0.
A homer in the top of the fourth by AnnMarie Torres gave the Mavericks an 8-0 lead.

Before the blowout could continue. the Roadrunners finally got on the board with two RBI’s in the bottom of the fourth. MSUD would then attempt to finalize their comeback with three more runs in the seventh, yet the gigantic lead the Mavericks put up at the beginning of the game was too much to overcome as CMU sealed the eventual 8-5 victory.
The game against TAMC had more scores for both sides and the Mavs nearly doubled their score from the game versus MSUD.
Zoe Pakes, Kellie Mrofcza, and Kaila Jacobi all got their own respective RBIs during the first inning following the scoreless top by TAMC.
The next runs were found in the third by Tegan Woosley with an RBI, Alexandria Dufour with a two-RBI single and AnnMarie Torres and Zoe Pakes both getting their own RBIs.
The sixth inning, which ended up being the last, saw four more runs, of which three of them were courtesy of Brooke Hodgson. Hodgson was sent home from a sacrifice fly by AnnMarie Torres.
The defense also had a decent performance. Despite there being more scores today than there were combined from yesterday, they only had two errors from both games. Pitching saw six strikeouts, three contributed by Brooke Hodgson.
“There is one more game on the road before we get back home, one more tough team from Texas,” Coach Garcia said. “We just want to come out and finish it up the right way. Being 4-0 doesn’t mean anything if you don’t finish the right way, so we are hoping to come out strong tomorrow.”
Sunday, the Mavericks will look to extend their wins with the final game of the week against St. Mary’s University, #22 in the league.
