For Tennis, Regionals loss marks season’s success

This Saturday, both the men and women’s tennis teams fell to their opponents in the NCAA Regional in Wichita Falls, Texas.

The women played the host team Midwestern State and lost 5-0. CMU was swept in all three doubles matches.

Both doubles teams, the No. 3, Katie Metz and Emily Dodson, and No. 2, Krysten Wykert and Shannen McNarmera, fell 8-2.

“I couldn’t be happier with the way the season ended. Winning the RMAC and then going to regionals was a perfect way to go out,” Wykert said. “It was humbling for both the men’s and women’s team. We knew going into the season that it would be a battle and that we would have to work for it. And that’s exactly what we did.”

The No. 1 doubles matches provided the most hope of the regional weekend. The duo of Rachel McLaughlin and Kaylee Davis lost 8-5.

Davis lost 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 singles to Kayla Casey. Katie Kirby then fell to Paige Boykin, allowing the Mustangs to advance. The remaining games went unfinished.

CMU’s men’s team lost 5-1 to St. Edwards. The only win for the men came in the No. 3 doubles team of Trevor Brown and Andres Garcia-Rojas (8-6).

The other two doubles teams lost and Jordan Lyden fell to Patrick Clynes at No. 1 singles 6-1, 7-5.

Blake Demond and Brown both fell to their opponents to give the win to St. Edwards.

“There’s a reason why [Coach Dan MacDonald] was named Coach of the Year. He gives so much to the team and puts in the extra time for us. It’s an honor being apart of his team. We may have lost at regionals, but we all tried our best and went down fighting. I love my team and all the crazy adventures we have had together.” Wykert said.
