Women’s tennis wins RMAC tourney, men take second

Shannen McNamara beat Western New Mexico’s Claudio Osuna after losing the first set to give the CMU women’s tennis team its third RMAC Tournament Championship on Saturday, earning an automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Regional.

The Mavs beat WNMU 5-4 in a bout that came down to the No. 3 singles match between McNamara and Osuna. CMU won two of the three doubles matches, with Kristyn Wykert and McNamara winning 8-0 at No. 2 doubles and Katie Metz and Emily Dodson winning 8-3 at No. 3 doubles. The Mavericks then fell at No. 1, 2 and 4 singles. Wykert won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 singles, and Katie Kirby won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

All eyes were on McNamara, who lost the first set 7-5 but won the second 6-4. A 6-3 win in the third set for McNamara clinched the championship for the Mavericks.

“It was one of the best feelings in the world,” McNamara said.

Play began on Friday when the women took on Colorado Christian. The No. 1 doubles Rachel McLaughlin and Kaylee Davis won 8-6. Wykert and McNamara won 8-1 at No. 2 doubles while the No. 3 doubles of Metz and Dodson won 8-0 to sweep the doubles.

McNamara and Wykert continued their hot streak by winning at No. 3 and 5 singles to defeat CCU.

“RMAC is so much more intense than conference play because each person is way more motivated to win since they know their season is on the line,” Kirby said.

The men’s team also began play on Friday with a huge 5-4 win over Metro State, thanks to Trevor Brown.

Jordan Lyden and Spencer Weinberg’s No. 1 doubles win left a must-win situation for Blake Demond and Cody Freischlag at the No. 4 and 5 singles.

“RMAC is right up my ally because I’m able to get my team pumped,” Demond said.

It came to Brown’s No. 6 singles match. He won the first set 6-2 before dropping the second 2-6. Brown then pulled off a 6-3 win in the third set to clinch the win and advance the men’s team to the championships in front of a cheering home crowd.

“I was really excited and glad we had so much support for the match,” Brown said.

CMU faced Western New Mexico University on Saturday, but their season came to an end after losing 5-2. Their two wins came from Lyden and Weinberg at No. 1 doubles and Freischlag and Demond at No. 2 doubles.
