Severinsen traces family pedigree on softball diamond

Running in the blood of the Severinsen family is a lineage of softball and baseball. Less common, however, is Jessica Severinsen’s family history at CMU.

A senior pitcher and first baseman for the Maverick softball team, Severinsen has made softball a huge part of her life and has been juggling the sport with her life for as long as she can remember.

From Elizabeth, Severinsen had a very dominating career, including a two-time All-Continental League selection as well as an all-state selection at Chaparral High School. Severinsen left Colorado to play Division I softball at the University of Northern Iowa where she was on a Missouri Valley Conference Championship team. Severinsen then transfered to CMU because it was closer to home and ensured that her parents could see her play more.

Severinsen’s parents, Doug and Katy, played baseball and softball for Mesa back in their college days. Katy was also a pitcher, and Doug was a third baseman.

“I like having them there to see me play. They have been to all my games in the past, and it’s nice to have them here now,” Severinsen said.

With this being her last year of playing, Severinsen’s list of goals for the end of her career is not long but still speaks to the type of athlete and leader she is.

“I just want to make a statement that the rest of the team that will be here next year can look up to, and to win the regional championship,” Severinsen said.

The Mavericks softball team rolled through the weekend with a sweep of the Western New Mexico Mustangs. The Mavs won the first game 7-0 and the second game 9-7.

Severinsen played like a woman possessed, not only in the pitching circle, but on the offensive side as well. Severinsen struck out 10 batters and gave up just three hits in six innings of work. She also fired up the bat and put a shot over the left field fence for a two-run homer in the first game, followed by another homerun in her first at bat of game two.

The Mavs will play Chadron State and Black Hills State next weekend in South Dakota.
