The CMU rodeo team hosted the Second Annual Regional Intercollegiate Maverick Stampede Rodeo Friday and Saturday at the Mesa County Fairgrounds.

The team competed in various events, including bull riding, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding and goat tying. These rodeo competitions are essentially NCAA preliminaries, with individuals and teams earning points that go toward deciding which teams qualify for the college national finals rodeo.

“The rodeo here at Mesa is one of ten rodeos we have in the Rocky Mountain Region,” said rodea team member Haillie Taylor. “The rodeo was a lot more successful than last year by far. It was a lot smoother with not a whole lot of speed bumps.”

The Mavs competed against 12 other schools from Utah, Idaho and Colorado, all of which are members of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.

According to the College National Finals Rodeo website, the CNFR is the “Rose Bowl” of college rodeo. Contestants compete all year in one of the NIRA’s 11 regions for a chance to rope or ride at the CNFR.

The top three students in each event and top two men’s and women’s teams from the NIRA’s 11 regions will qualify for the CNFR.

The 66th CNFR will be held in Casper, Wyoming, from June 15-21 at the Casper Events Center.
