Culture Jam highlights campus diversity

Over the past few years, the Culture Jam has been one of the staple points of Mav Fest, with karaoke and student performances from clubs that set up tables all around the Bookcliff lounge to help spread awareness of the different backgrounds of CMU students.

“Culture Jam is a great opportunity for us to tell people about our clubs and tell campus who we are, what we do as a club and who we represent,” Yilin Wang, a member of the International Student Alliance, said. “It’s for international students who are here for all four years. We try to get students more involved in the school and are here to help them not get homesick.”

Clubs set up activities and offered information about their respective cultures as a prelude to the ASG debates that evening.

The Native American Alliance was there with information on Ute Indian History and the descendent of the Ute Chief Ouray, Roland McCook, who serves as vice-chairman of the Smithsonian Institution’s Native American Reparations Review Committee.

Across the way, the Latino Student Alliance engaged with students making tissue paper flowers.

“What we’re trying to focus on is encompassing all of the culture and customs from Latin America and presenting that to the students,” club leader JC Hernandez said. “We want to create that environment on campus where others want to hear and learn about others’ customs.”

The Black Student Alliance had a set-up to make beaded African jewelry.

“We’re here to show what our culture is about and what more there is to it,” Cooper said. “We used to just host parties, but we decided it was time to step outside the box a little bit.”

The growth of Mesa’s student body means the growth of differences among individual students. By hosting Culture Jam last Thursday, the Culture Advisory Board created a perfect environment for students to learn about each other all in one place.
