Dixie St. sweeps softball doubleheader

The Mavericks, sitting at 17-17, have already seen it all this season. So when junior outfielder Rachel Boothe said that they are not worried after dropping both games to Dixie State in Wednesday’s doubleheader, 3-1 and 6-2, it’s hard to believe anything different.

“We just have to re-simplify the game,” said Boothe, who scored a run in game two. “It’s definitely a struggle right now, but we just need to focus. We don’t like to be a .500 team, so we’re going to get back to who we are as a team and have fun.”

After starting the season 2-8, they managed to win 12 of their next 13 against RMAC opponents, sweeping UC – Colorado Springs, Colorado School of  Mines and New Mexico Highlands in the process.

“It felt good,” Boothe said of the streak. “You obviously feel pretty strong after something like that.”

Things have become rocky once again, however, as the Mavs have dropped eight of their last 11 games while getting outscored by an average of 7.6-2.9 in the losses, including the two to Red Storm in which they mustered only three runs combined and were struck out nine times in game one.

“We just didn’t get the hits,” Boothe said. “They got the hits and produced the runs and we didn’t today, but sooner or later you’re going to find the holes and you have to know your approach when you get to the plate.”

The Mavericks take on Western New Mexico University (12-29, 10-18 RMAC) in a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday in a quick turnaround as they attempt to climb back above .500.
