November saw nothing but impressive play from the CMU women’s basketball team. It’s the type of play that leads to bringing home an RMAC title. The Mavericks’ record now stands at 6-0, 2-0 RMAC. They have yet to score less than 60 points a game, outscoring opponents by an average of 33 points and scoring more than 77 in the last three games.

“We really have been clicking offensively and defensively,” forward Kelsey Sigl said. “Our defense has been the biggest component to our 6-0 season so far. We’ve been able to dictate and control the tempo of games, and if we’re able to hold teams to 45 points a game, our chances increase that much more.”

The Mavs are led by star seniors Katrina Selsor and Sigl, who have been putting up impressive numbers. Sigl dominated both matchups this weekend with 17 points in Friday night’s 87-43 victory over Chadron State and another 17 points that helped contribute to the 77-48 blowout of Black Hills State on Saturday.

Saturday’s game had Sigl, Selsor and Bruna Diechman all scoring in double figures. The Mavericks also lit up the stat sheet with 11 three-pointers and earned a living from the charity stripe, hitting 16 of 18.

On the season, the Mavericks are shooting 47.7 percent from the field, and 38.6 percent from behind the arc.

Being a senior captain, Sigl knows that leadership will be paramount as the season continues off of the team’s hot 2-0 start in RMAC play.

“Leadership is valuable on and off the court,” Sigl said. “I think it’s vital for the seniors to set the tempo and example for the younger classmen. But to be a great team we’re going to need leadership from everyone.”

The Mavericks are already making a strong case to be named the team to beat in the RMAC, and, if the play continues at this level, they should have no problem taking home the conference title.

The Mavericks are at home this Friday and Saturday in Brownson Arena against RMAC opponents Western New Mexico University (1-5, 0-2 RMAC) and New Mexico Highlands University (2-4, 2-0 RMAC).
