Land and minerals: Monthly speaker visits club

“Education is the future of the energy industry,” CMU Landman Club President Chase Snyder said. “It’s kind of our motto.”

The Landman club is centered on the job of a Landman.

“They are a mediator between the mineral right owners and the oil and gas companies,” Synder said.

Landman also work out mineral leases, surface agreements and research pieces of land.

“They research who owns the land and minerals, do testing and get permission for companies,” Snyder said. “They are really petroleum based.”

However, many other companies use them as well, not just oil and gas companies.

“They do anything that involves land,” Snyder said.

The Landman club meets once a month, usually on the second Thursday, but this month the club is meeting a week early to avoid finals week.

“We usually have a community speaker,” Snyder said. “Last time we had an environmental specialist.”

The club’s next guest speaker, Steve Weiste, works at oxburrow mine. Weiste will be talking about the economics and political aspects changing the coal industry.

“Everyone is welcome to attend,” Snyder said. “Come find out what the energy industry is all about.”

The Landman club is still a relatively new club.

“We are two years old, but we didn’t do anything last year,” Snyder said. “We really want to get a basis going.”

The goal of the club is to be a networking and education tool for members, even if they are not a part of the energy industry.

Steve Weiste will be speaking Thursday, Dec. 6, at 5:00 pm in ACB Room 211. The meeting also includes a Holiday Social and Cookie Exchange.
