First ever Rainbow Prom is success

Last Saturday Gay Straight Alliance put on the first ever Rainbow Prom at Mesa Theatre. All proceeds will support Colorado West Pride to bring more gay pride events to Grand Junction.

“The LGBT community and our allies really need opportunities like this in a community like Grand Junction so that we have that support and meaningful connections made among friends,” Cultural Diversity Board Communications Manager Donovan Haynie said. “I think it was also just a great opportunity for people to just come together and have a great time.”

The event had a very successful turnout, which left the dance floor and stage area packed. A number of artists came from Salt Lake City to perform.

“It was such a great event,” Haynie said. “It was like the big gay prom that myself and I think a lot of people, especially the older generation never got to have while in high school.”

Colorado West Pride held a similar even over the summer called the Red Party. It was a smaller event, but still had performers and great attendance. GSA co-sponsored the Red Party at Mesa Theatre, which proved to be very successful.

“It worked out as a good location for this type of event last time so that is probably why it was chosen again for this event,” Haynie said.

This Friday GSA is also having a pumpkin carving fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pumpkins will cost $3 for one or $5 for two and all are welcome to come support.
