“Your social life does not exist” An inside look into law school

CMU graduate and former ASG President Nick Lopez spoke to the Pre-Law Club students about his first semester at the University of Denver’s law school last week.

“Your social life does not exist [in law school],” Lopez said. “It takes up more time than a full-time job. When I’m not in class, I’m in the library.”

Lopez said he chose DU because it is a prestigious university in Colorado and it offers many opportunities.

Law school “breaks you down to build you back up,” he said.

“I’ve witnessed people crying and breaking down in the hallways. Everyone is going to have some kind of breakdown during law school.”

Despite the rigors of his schooling, Lopez said he enjoys most of what he has learned so far.

Lopez became interested in law after he sustained a neck injury in football.

“Football was everything to me,” Lopez said. “When I couldn’t play anymore, I had to find something else to take up my time. Being involved in ASG took place of football. Political interest then led me to a deeper interest in law.”

Senior and Pre-Law Club President Jeremy Watson advised students that are considering law school to have a good resume.

“Law schools are looking more at extracurricular activities than they were in the past,” Watson said. “Join clubs and get involved in the community. They are also looking for diversity. You don’t have to have a particular major to be accepted.”

CMU’s Pre-Law Club has about 65 members. Any CMU student with an interest in law is able to join. There are no membership dues or any other requirements. The club’s meeting times are based on the schedules of the speakers they host. The club also helps students prepare for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), which they are required to take before being accepted into law school.

The Pre-Law Club will host comedian Sam Adams at 7 p.m. April 27 in the University Center Ballroom. Tickets are $30 for students and $50 for nonstudents. To find out more about the event and the club, email cmuprelawclub@gmail.com.
