The journey of a walk-on: Tony LaPorta fights for a CMU Football roster spot

25 hours.

That’s what I was thinking to myself as I walked between the Mav center and Walker field on my way to my NCAA physical.

25 hours from then, I would be on the football field with 20 other hopeful football players who are trying to prove that they should be wearing a Maverick uniform next fall.

After spending my junior and senior year at Windsor High School playing football, I wasn’t ready to walk away from football just yet.

During my freshman orientation here at Mesa over the summer I met with Coach Ramunno to talk about walking on to the team as a defensive end.  Coach Ramunno and I had a great conversation, and it was understood that I would not be a part of the team in the fall, but I was allowed to lift and workout with the red shirt players to get ready for spring ball.

While his departure changes my plans and timeline of getting onto the field, I am excited to prove myself to coach Martin and the rest of the CMU coaching staff.

Whether I am lucky enough to make the team or not, I can’t wait to see how strong of a program CMU football will be in the fall of 2012.
