A hike for humanity: Courageous Couple Visits CMU

5,000 miles, 13 states, 366 days, and one cause.

On May 25, 2011, Kirk and Cindy Sinclair began their journey on the American Discovery Trail, a 5,000 mile walk. The spirited couple plans on being away from their home for a year and will be making stops along the way in order to support and promote humanitarian causes including housing, hunger and health.

They drove from their home in Connecticut to the coast of San Francisco, which marked the beginning of the trail. Since that day, the Sinclairs have been walking for more than 90 days and have been inspiring many by the grand gesture that they are making. The Sinclairs were at Colorado Mesa University to give our community a better grasp on their commitment. When Mr. Sinclair was asked why he does this, he simply said, “Passion.”

Sinclair is a strong believer in communities. Unfortunately, the average community involvement is now only 6% within America. This may have an immense impact on many problems within our society. As Sinclair pointed out, people in America are willing to donate, give, and even occasionally do projects for various causes but few of us do things with one another.

“Belong to people before you belong to corporations,” Sinclair said.

Despite texting, Facebook, and whispering rumors growing at a tremendous rate, Sinclair suggests that today’s society is antisocial. Our society has come to rely on technology and large corporations rather than simply relying upon one another. The Sinclairs have been working with Lions Clubs throughout the nation in order to encourage more intimate and involved communities. As well as the Lions Clubs, the Sinclairs support Habitat for Humanity, Doctors Without Borders, and Church World Services.

“People invest in causes they believe in. We need to start believing in people,” said Sinclair

The Sinclairs encouraged us to be a part of the future generation, build a better community within our town, our campus, and even our dorm halls.
